One of our most popular products – pumpkin seed butter is obtained by grinding husk free pumpkin seeds. Its delicious and unique flavour won it the Soil Association Award for Best Shelf product in 2006. Mostly used as a spread it can also be used as a base for dips – just add a few tablespoons of lemon juice diluted with water.
Most people have heard that pumpkin seed oil is healthy but what they aren’t aware of is that pumpkin seeds are not only an excellent source of omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids (which help reduce cholesterol levels and decrease the risk of heart disease) but also a whole range of minerals: zinc (important for immune system support and male prostate health), magnesium (together with vitamin D helps in calcium absorption, regulates heart beat), iron (essential to the oxygen carrying component of the red blood cell needed for energy production and protein metabolism), potassium ( important to cellular function and conduction of nerve impulses), phosphorous (helps form bones and teeth and is critical to the movement of energy in the body). Pumpkin seeds are also rich in phytosterols, compounds which are found in plants and believed to lower cholesterol.
Pumpkin seed butter also contains high levels of vitamin E (helps prevent the breakdown of unsaturated fatty acids due to the oxidation caused by free radicals), niacin (detoxification of xenochemicals, DNA repairs, production of steroids) and folic acid (aids in the production of red blood cells).
